Final Portfolio

Due 4/28. Critique.

15 finished prints, matted, toned (if applicable), and spotted.

The portfolio will be evaluated as a separate entity, based on the selection of images included. Edit wisely, soliciting opinions from instructor and classmates.

Images should be drawn from various assignments, but should also be a presentation of your strongest work (images and prints). A possible sampling might include:

Total: 15

A portfolio is a professional presentation—take care with matting. Avoid scuffing, finger-prints, etc. Some sort of portfolio case is preferred.

Open Project

Due dates:

4/5. Written proposals
4/14. Progress critique.
4/28. Five finished prints, matted. Critique.

Create a succinct group of images around a theme/idea or concept of your choosing. Proposed projects are subject to instructor approval.

Proposals should include the following:
  1. 1 page double space
  2. A description of the project as you currently see it
  3. A brief discussion of at least 2 well-known photographers, historical or contemporary, who have addressed similar themes or techniques that you find interesting or admirable
  4. A brief discussion of possible challenges, technical, aesthetic, or otherwise

Experimental Shooting

Due 4/14. Three or four finished prints. Critique.

Create a group of images that explore some of the experimental shooting approaches suggested in class. These may include, night photography, extended exposures, painting with light, infrared, in-camera multiple exposures, lens baby, holga, pinhole, large format with extreme movements, and/or other. It is preferable to print a group of images within one technique. Either three prints of one technique or two prints each of two techniques.

Project 2: The Human Form—318; Open—319

Due: 3/31—critique. [REVISED DEADLINE]

318:
For this project, create a coherent group of images that creatively works with the human form. Whether portrait, narrative, abstract, political, expressive, or..., create a group of images that stretch the boundaries of what you are used to. Start with a familiar interest and allow yourself to get carried away by the possibilities!

Shooting expectations:
  • 35mm, 24 exp rolls: 8 rolls min.
  • 35mm, 36 exp rolls: 6 rolls min.
  • 120, 6 rolls min.
  • 4x5, at least 20 successful sheets
Prints:
  • 6 final, portfolio worthy prints
  • 8x10, full frame (or close to it), or larger
  • All prints should be spotted
  • At least three prints should be window matted

Open Project/319

Written Project Proposal Due: 2/8. 1 page typed and printed.

Sense of Place Project/318

Create a compelling group of images that captures the character of a special place. What is the story you are telling about this place? Is is magical, moody, unusual, typical? How can you make images that convey these notions. The definition of "place" is fairly wide open. Think big and run with it.

Preliminary due date/progress critique: 2/15 (At least 2/3 of shooting should be completed)
Project completed and due: 2/24 (critique)

Shooting expectations:
  • 35mm, 24 exp rolls: 8 rolls min.
  • 35mm, 36 exp rolls: 6 rolls min.
  • 120, 6 rolls min.
  • 4x5, at least 20 successful sheets
Prints:
  • 6 final, portfolio worthy prints
  • 8x10, full frame (or close to it), or larger
  • Prints should be flattened

  • Contrast ring-around prints from last class critique
  • 2 Additional refined prints
  • Film/Contact sheets for Depth-Of-Field
